Africa: Climate Debate And Girls' Education
Ten years ago, the international community began a new century with a compact to tackle extreme poverty. To promote development. We have made great strides toward the Millennium Development Goals. But there is not much time to the 2015 deadline, and still much distance to travel. The global recession, the energy crisis, food insecurity, climate change all have made development more difficult, yet more urgent. Yes, markets may be rebounding. Yet these gains are not finding their way to the villages, the streets and the daily lives of far too many families.

Mixed News On Haiti's Recovery
On Saturday February 6, I returned to Port-au-Prince after an absence of 10 days. I found some things have changed, with some positive signs indicating more aid is flowing and the very first steps towards recovery are under way.(..) Food aid is getting out to more and more hungry and homeless Haitian people. The World Food Programme says 1.8 million people have received food aid, out of a total population of two million in need.

U.N. Forced To Cut Food Rations In Yemen
The United Nations food agency said on Friday a lack of funds had forced it to cut back rations for around one million people in Yemen, despite growing chronic hunger. (..) "We don't physically have enough food to give everybody a full ration. That means we are reducing the rations to stretch it out and make it last as long as possible," said Emilia Casella, spokeswoman of the World Food Programme (WFP).

UN Humanitarian response depot in Accra sends relief items to Haiti
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said today its UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) in Ghana has transported 150 metric tons of urgently needed relief items to victims of the Haiti earthquake. “This is the first time the Accra depot has airlifted items to a country outside Africa since it began operations in 2007. To date, we've responded to emergencies in 17 African countries including Ghana. We're happy to help Haiti at a critical time like this,” said Ismail Omer, WFP Representative in Ghana.

Relief gaps spread as Haitians flee capital
After weeks of delays and bottlenecks, the international relief effort in Port-au-Prince is becoming somewhat routine. People line up for food and water daily, and roads are clogged with trucks and military vehicles. (..) The U.N.'s World Food Program says it has been focusing on Port-au-Prince but is trying to help the outskirts. The program says it has distributed food to 1.6 million people and counting. "We have continued to scale-up deliveries in outlying areas," said Marcus Prior, a WFP spokesman. "In other places, we've been able to do spot deliveries to institutions like hospitals and orphanages, but it's been extremely difficult to get a clear picture of where people have moved to and what the needs are."

World Food Programme Announces New Deputy Executive Director
ROME – WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran today announced the appointment of Ramiro Lopes da Silva of Portugal - a 25-year veteran of key WFP emergency operations around the world - as the agency's new Deputy Executive Director of External Relations.  Lopes da Silva was recently deployed to Haiti, to lead the vital emergency response there.
